Two-year programme

Study Regulation

The reform law no. 508 of 21 December 1999 provides for an organic redefinition of the didactic system of the traditional higher education courses at the Conservatoire, with richer curricula that are more functional for entering the world of today’s musical professions. These curricula are divided into first- and second-level diploma courses (three-year and two-year respectively) and also provide for master’s degrees, specialisation courses and research training courses.

The didactics draw increasingly on the sense of multidisciplinarity and, above all, is articulated in a constellation of courses – measured in weights of hours and credits – collected within functional training areas, divided into basic, characterising, related or supplementary courses. Within certain limits, students are free to choose certain courses, or they can count for credit other educational activities, carried out both inside and outside the Conservatoire. In the latter case, the recognition of the educational activity is assessed by the Conservatoire, in order to define the appropriate measure of credits in relation to the work carried out.

A variety of teaching types are involved: from individual lessons to group lessons with contributions of individualised experiences to face-to-face group lessons; in addition, the educational offer includes a significant use of laboratory and internship experiences. Also important are the masterclasses: intensive experiences designed to deepen and perfect specific topics, including with lecturers from outside the institute.

For first-level academic diplomas, the new diploma courses are structured in three years, for a total of 180 credits. A further two years, for a total of 120 credits, are required for second-level academic diplomas (this is the well-known 3+2 model, originating from universities).

Credits measure the effort required to reach certain educational milestones: more demanding courses correspond to higher educational credits. The measurement of course credits is accompanied, for examinations, by the expression of grades in thirtieths, as well as by the ratio of the final grade to 110 for the first and second level academic diploma.

In total, between the main campus in Trento and the detached campus in Riva del Garda, the ‘Bonporti’ Conservatoire has put in place the higher courses of both the Three-year degree course (first-level academic diploma courses) and the Two-year degree course (second-level academic diploma courses).

With regard to the latter, Ministerial Decree 14 of 9 January 2018 allowed the transformation from experimental to regular second-level academic diploma courses. The Conservatoire of Trento has fully updated their contents, offering a targeted, modern and easily modulable curriculum according to the student’s requirements.

Registration and admission examinations

The second-level academic diploma courses (Experimental Higher Education Biennia) constitute the specialised link in the academic training, according to the articulation of the studies, which is structured as a whole in a first fundamental stage, at three years (Experimental Higher Education Triennia, first-level academic diploma courses), and a second stage, at two years (Biennia, second-level).

The second-level academic diploma courses take on a first definition, which covers all courses, whereby they are second-level academic diploma courses in Musical Disciplines. A first distinction into large groupings distinguishes, within the musical disciplines, 2 major directions: one interpretative-compositional, and another technological. Within these two large areas and groupings, the various ‘educational tracks’ are placed, which in turn can be conceived as internal courses.

Quantifying all the various ‘educational tracks’ authorised for activation by the ‘Bonporti’ Conservatoire, there are 18 essential curricula. These, as can be seen in the diagram below, can be divided into several alternative courses. For example: one can pursue the course of Singing by attending the ‘Opera-theatre’ course or the ‘Vocal chamber music’ course. One can follow the Cello course by attending the “Concert” course or the “Orchestral” course and so on;

At the end of the Two-Year Second Level Specialised Course, a second-level academic diploma is awarded.

The prerequisite for attendance is twofold: possession of a first-level academic diploma (traditional or experimental diploma) and a second-level secondary school diploma (former high school diploma). Theoretically, a university degree can also give access to second-level academic diploma courses.

A practical orientation leads to the conclusion that the most coherent connections are those concerning Conservatoire diplomas that relate first and second level, according to homogeneous disciplines. E.g.: for access to the Piano course it is important to have the diploma in Piano, for access to the Composition course – ‘Composition’ and ‘Cinema’ courses – that in Composition, for access to the Jazz course that in Jazz Music, and so on.

Moreover, to enter the Chamber Music course, it is sufficient to hold any Conservatoire diploma. The ‘technological’ two-year course is also open to confluences of this kind, as well as lending itself to university training careers (especially for degrees related to IT and technology).
Beyond these considerations, it is useful to clarify that in order to gain access to the specialised two-year degree programmes it is still necessary to pass an entrance examination. Above all, the basic qualifications required for admission are required to pass the entrance examination. Valid qualifications and certifications may be represented. The concrete expression of the musical competences present and achieved, in relation to the access standards that have been drawn up for the various training courses, is also of importance. Applicants will be ranked in order of merit and will be admitted within the limits of the places available. The two-year courses will only be activated if a minimum number of enrolments is reached for each pathway.

Students attending a university course and an academic course at the Conservatoire at the same time are required to submit this form to the teaching secretariat.

Repertoire analysis test

Test programme PDF 2

Test (in person): 29/09/2022 at 10.00 a.m. at the Trento campus via S.Giovanni Bosco n.4 – to register and for any requests for clarifications please contact Prof. Roberto Gianotti by email (roberto.gianotti@conservatorio.tn.ti) or Prof. Tarcisio Battisti ( tarcisio.battisti@conservatorio.tn.it) .

The qualifications that allow direct admission to the first two-year Repertoire Analysis course are:

  • Level I academic diploma
  • Previous Diploma in Choral Music
  • Previous Diploma of Instrumentation for Bands
  • Medium-level qualification in Composition (previous regulations)
  • Intermediate certificate of Organ course (previous regulations)
  • Eligibility in competition for Conservatoire professorships.

Diplomas of previous regulations of other instruments or pre-academic level certificates are not valid.

Because they follow specific composition courses, the students of the following courses do not have to take the test:

  • Composition,
  • Instrumentation for Band,
  • Choir Conducting,
  • New technologies and multimedia,
  • Jazz,
  • Popular Music,
  • Music Education.

In the absence of these qualifications, the student will have to prove that he/she possesses the harmonic-analytical knowledge required to attend the two-year repertoire analysis courses. To this end, they must pass an entrance test.
The test consists of a written, formal, phraseological, harmonic analysis, also in graphic form, of a classical sonata (maximum duration 4 hours).

Students who do not pass the test or who do not present themselves for the roll-call of the test, will have to take a 30-hour remedial course taught by a Repertoire Analysis teacher as a deficit, with a timetable to be defined.

It is possible to take the remedial course and the first two-year course of REPERTOR ANALYSIS at the same time. It is not possible to take the examination for the latter course before the completion of the remedial course with a passing grade or by decision of the course teacher.
