General regulations

The current legislation governing the system of High Artistic, Musical and Coreutic Education (AFAM) is Law No. 508 of 21 December 1999, a reform law that, after the Gentile text of 1923, made important changes to the education system, reuniting the institutions in a single system inspired by common principles and guiding criteria. Law 508/99 reformed the sector of artistic education, defining it as ‘tertiary level higher education of a specialised nature’ and Article 2(2) transformed the Music Conservatoires and Istituti Musicali Pareggiati into Istituti Superiori di Studi Musicali, while the Accademia Nazionale di Danza was transformed into Istituto Superiore di Studi Coreutici.
